Saving Children's Lives: "Hats For Infants"
Once again, Medical Missionaries has seen
how one person can make a difference in saving lives of children in the Third World, even without traveling to distant countries.
When Eunah Lee, a 12th grade student at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland, learned through her school's
UNICEF club that high levels of infant mortality in some countries could be reduced if infants are kept warm right after birth,
she decided to do something to help. Here is how she explains it:
“I care deeply about the welfare of babies and children around the world, especially
in developing countries where there are high rates of infant mortality. Infant mortality is frightening and we should work
to prevent it. I got my idea from the Save The Children's program, 'Caps for Good.' The hats are for newborn babies just out
of the womb. They are intended to keep the babies warm and therefore prevent illnesses such as pneumonia.”
Eunah organized a campaign to knit hats for
infants. She ultimately collected 1,000 hats, which were hand-knitted by herself, her mother, her teachers, and members of
her church. She donated 600 hats to Global Health Ministry, a Pennsylvania organization that will use the hats to warm infants
in the mountains of Peru. She donated another 400 to Medical Missionaries for infants in Thomassique, Haiti. Eunah Lee is a good example of the difference
that one person can make. We thank her for her dedication to helping the poor of the world, especially the most vulnerable. |
